After tending my Pink Queen roses and entwining their stems with the trellis early one morning, I was inspired to create this tall original with two sizes of graduated natural cane on an Ambrosia Maple base. Mr. Bobby Williams, Williams Family Mill, expertly crafted this thicker base and it shows the satiny grain of the Ambrosia to great advantage. The openwork floral and trellis motif at the lower edge and the closely aligned, shaved staves carry your eye up the hand-formed, slightly curved body to a cane rim and wrapped bumper, lashed with a split doubled blanket stitch. Finished with light shellac.
Ambrosia Maple of North America is known for its satiny ribbon and multi-colored grain caused by the Ambrosia beetle burrowing in and leaving a fungus. While it produces beautiful gray, russet and brown tones, it does not harm the integrity of the wood. No two are ever alike.
